Our History

Churches Mutual was formed in February 2015

Churches Mutual was formed in February 2015 in collaboration by the Church of England, the Church of Scotland, the Methodist Church of Great Britain, the Church in Wales and the Scottish Episcopal Church.  The Common Bond now includes eligible members of the United Reformed Church and The Roman Catholic Church of England & Wales and of Scotland.

We started taking deposits immediately on 11th February 2015, and then on 8th May we started offering loans.  Since launching we have made a real difference to our members as they serve the church and support their families. Some highlights include:

More than 1,000 savers whose £4 million in savings are put to work supporting the mission of the church
Over £10 million in loans advanced since May 2015
Over £6 million in car loans, providing essential transport to support ministry around Great Britain
Over £2 million in restructuring loans which have allowed members to consolidate expensive consumer debt into one affordable loan
Products which are built specifically for the church, for example loans for ministers going on their first post or approaching retirement
